About Us: General interests to breeding ethics

Welcome to Peachkins Sphynx! I’m Ann, the founder of Peachkins and life long animal lover. Peachkins is a small in home breeding program dedicated to raising healthy and well-socialized kittens. We recently relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada after having been located in Eastern Washington State. My first encounter with a sphynx was in 2003 while at Washington State University studying for my graduate degree. My roommate at the time had several sphynx, some were pets and some were breeding cats. At first I didn’t know what to think having been a self proclaimed “dog person”. Well it didn’t take long for me to be completely enthralled with these hairless wonders. Before long I was helping raise litters of sphynx and at times even bottle feeding kittens and learning all about husbandry. Shortly after graduation I was given my first breeding cats from my mentor, a pioneer of the breed, who started breeding sphynx during her graduate work in the 1980’s. Since then I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best sphynx breeders in the world. I really enjoy rearing litters and seeing each kitten off to a wonderful home. In addition to breeding I am an advocate of rescue and I am active with the Sphynx Rescue Alliance, please see my rescue page to read more.I am also a professional animal behaviorist and trainer. I’ve taught obedience classes for several years, but now mostly focus on behavior modification for companion animals. Needless to say early development with my kittens is very important and I do as much early exposure as possible. There is so much that needs to be done and each litter is a huge responsibility. I hope you enjoy this site and the information that has been compiled over years of experience and research. Claire came to us in spring 2011. She is one of the most affectionate sphynx we have ever met and that is saying a lot. In other words she would loved to be glued onto any human and she isn't really picky. Claire came to us declawed from her previous owner. This is a procedure that we strongly oppose for many reasons and Claire was further evidence to the fact that declawing should be considered animal cruelty as she does have pain in her paws.

Ben is one of the most fun loving and social sphynx I have ever met. Ben is from a litter of 5 sphynx kittens. All kittens were so nice I had a very difficlut time picking which to keep. I ended up taking Ben and two of his siblings to a TICA show in order to have a judge and long time sphynx breeder assess the kittens. Ben was her pick of litter. Her advise turned out to be very valuable as Ben achieved his Supreme Grand Champion in TICA on his 1st birthday in just 3 shows!! He also earned a regional win as the 12th best cat in region. Ben lives with us in our master bedroom. He is never caged and a dearly valued family member. Ben loves to sing and chirp to his lady friends and loves car rides.

Sphynx and Health

While Sphynx are a relatively healthy breed they are not without a few afflictions. Heart disease is one of the most prevalent and worrisome health concerns in the Sphynx breed. Specifically Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, most often referred to as HCM by breeders and veterinarians, which is a fatal heart. Please see our page dedicated to HCM for more in depth information about this disease, prevention and education.

Other noteworthy health concerns in the Sphynx breed include allergies, digestive issues, teeth and gum disease, skin issues, eye injury and upper respiratory issues. Some of the above conditions are much more prevalent than others and some are mostly found in specific lines, but all are noteworthy. Sphynx HCM HCM, Sphynx and Pet OwnersHCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) is a heart disease that is common in many breeds of cats including the typical domestic. While there has not been statistical analysis of the Sphynx population it is recognized by researchers and breeders to be heavily prevalent. Scientific research has thus far shown HCM to be a familial disease and it is theorized to be autosomal dominant in Sphynx. This means that only one parent needs to be affected to pass HCM to offspring. Specific genes have been identified in some breeds of cats including Maine Coon’s and Ragdoll’s and currently there is active research being conducted to isolate a gene for Sphynx.What are signs and symptoms of HCM?The unfortunate thing with HCM is often there are no signs or symptoms and a cat that is acting normal one day can be dead the next. In Sphynx the onset of HCM is highly variable and has been seen in kittens only months old all the way up to senior cats. Signs and symptoms of HCM include but are not limited to:• A decrease in activity• Lethargy• Increased respiration• Panting or labored breathing especially during activity• Coughing• Collapsing• Weakness, especially in hind limbs• Ataxia (loss of coordination/balance)• Poor circulation to extremities (paws always feel cold)If you notice any of these symptoms in your cat seek veterinary advice immediately. There are treatments and medications that can increase the quality and longevity of your cats life.How is HCM diagnosed?The most accurate and effective way to diagnose HCM in Sphynx is by having a board certified veterinary cardiologist perform an echocardiogram with color Doppler. HCM is a progressive disease so one scan alone is not enough to determine if your cat might be at risk, unless they are already in disease. When cardiologists perform this type of screening they are looking at multiple dimensions of the heart, from the thickness of the walls to the blood flow and contraction of the muscles. Most cardiologists will classify hearts as normal/healthy, equivocal, HCM mild, HCM moderate, HCM severe. An equivocal rating is often given when there is not enough evidence one way or the other to determine if the heart is healthy or diseased. When a cat is HCM severe they are usually in or close to congestive heart failure and their time is usually limited. It is always recommended that cats diagnosed with HCM are also tested for hypertension and thyroid problems as they can cause secondary HCM. How does HCM affect the heart?HCM when broken down is hypertrophy meaning enlargement, cardio meaning heart and myopathy meaning damaged muscle. As it’s name suggest HCM results in a thickening of the musles of the heart. HCM is usually restricted to the left ventricle, but there are 3 main types, symmetrical meaning an even thickening, asymmetrical meaning one side is affected more than the other and apWhat can a Sphynx fancier do to help educate and reduce the incidence of HCM?There are three very important steps every Sphynx lover can do to reduce the incidence of this horrible disease. 1) Only support breeders that scan their cats regularly for HCM at a board certified cardiologist. ASK FOR PROOF!2) Scan your own cats regularly for HCM and report results to databases. Declawing

Declawing: Creating other problems Many feel that declawing a cat will be the answer to unwanted behaviors, but this risky surgery often creates more than it solves. The surgery itself is extremely painful and requires a long healing time with high risk for infection. One of the many complications is a non-successful cut that allows fragments of the nail to regrow making it very painful to walk and sometimes requiring additional surgeries. There are also bone spurs that can develop, especially if movement is restricted in the paw, again requiring more surgery. Cats are very stoic animals and often even the most astute cat parents do not notice their cat is in pain until it is tremendous. On the most basic level declawing is amputating a part of the digit leaving exposed nerves. The exposed nerves can and often cause phantom pains, pain where the removed limb or digit should be. These pains can be intense and feel sharp and stabbing. The chronic pain produced by this surgery means more behavior problems. Most often declawed cats have litter box issues. It is thought that their paws become hypersensitive and it becomes painful to dig, so they will then seek out soft materials like clothing and bedding. Cats often use their paws to communicate. One common communication is for a cat to thump another cat or human with their paw to display a dislike. Declaws can often make it too painful or uncomfortable to use their paws for communication, so instead they use their teeth.
